Course Improvements/Suggestions


I actually really enjoyed the class, not really the material, but the teachers and students made the class much more fun for me. I generally don’t like English class just because it’s the same thing every year. Read a book, write an essay, watch a video, write what we felt about the video, read a book, write an essay, watch a video, write what we felt about the video. You get the point? However, I did like how this class made videos. I got to learn how to use a Mac and how to video edit on a Mac. I loved the veteran project and I believe it should be a tradition with your future classes. It was true learning experience. One of my lesser favorites was the Speak Truth to Power project. I hated it. Sure I learned new things about my defender and human rights, but the video was painful for me. There were tears at one point, I’m not even kidding. Is there any way you could cut that out or instead write an essay about it instead of making a video? I also wish we read more enjoyable books, but due to my generations lack of interest it’s hard to find books that we actually enjoy. I did enjoy the Old Man and The Sea as one of the books we read. I didn’t like Into The Wild it was too predictable and boring for me. But I mostly hated the Les Stroud SurvivorMan episodes; sure they were a nice break from class but the writing assignments with it I didn’t like at all. I barely paid attention or enjoyed the episode, because I was focus on getting the assignment done. Overall, I did really enjoy the class, and I’ll miss my teachers.

Survival

So in English class we were forced to learn about survival traits and what overall is the most essential survival skill. Bored already? Sorry, but don’t worry I am too. During this unit we read the book Old Man and The Sea , watched various episodes of SurvivorMan , and depending on what group you were in you also read either Unbroken , Lord of The Flies , or Into The Wild . It was a long unit. However, all the characters possessed or showed the traits that were very repetitive. I believe those traits are the traits that you need for survival. The first trait was determination. Determination is something everyone is born with and it shines in our best or worst moments. In Old Man and The Sea , Santiago showed he was determined to catch the fish by willingly to keep trying till he death. 9-12 Reflection

Throughout my years in high school, I was always the planner in my group and I would always schedule the get together, proms, camping trips, parties. It was a lot of worked but it always paid off. One my most memorable parties I believe was senior year Christmas party. For many reasons, the main one being all of our answers to Jackbox Party Games questions and Cards Against Humanity. Jackbox Party Games is an online game that features variety of games within it, and the one we were playing is called QuipLash. It’s were you answer prompts and two people answers compare and everyone votes for the best answer. My best friend since first grade has an insane phobia of mannequins. She’s absolutely terrified of them, and I take total advantage of it. I was answering a prompt on Quiplash that said ‘What do mannequins think about?’ I answered with “Where’s Hailey >:D” I ended up getting all the votes which is called ‘QuipLash’ and a wave of laughter and an angry glare. Speak Truth to Power Project

My STTP Defender was activist Juliana Dogbadzi. She speaks out about slavery/trafficking and a religious slavery known as Trokosi. I learned that she was originally a Trokosi slave from Ghana, and that when she successful escaped when she was seventeen, she began to rescue other slaves as well. For those who don’t know, Trokosi known as “Slave of the Gods,” is a religious servitude where families send their young virgin daughters (eight-ten year olds) for past crimes of relatives to be slaves for the holy man in the country. They would be force to cook and clean without any pay, breaks or food, given no proper clothing, as well as be used for sexual services. If the women were to become pregnant it was no excuse to be pardon for their chores or given extra food. Also if any of the women acted up they were beaten or killed. Pretty scary, right?
