Survival

So in English class we were forced to learn about survival traits and what overall is the most essential survival skill. Bored already? Sorry, but don’t worry I am too. During this unit we read the book Old Man and The Sea, watched various episodes of SurvivorMan, and depending on what group you were in you also read either Unbroken, Lord of The Flies, or Into The Wild. It was a long unit. However, all the characters possessed or showed the traits that were very repetitive. I believe those traits are the traits that you need for survival. The first trait was determination. Determination is something everyone is born with and it shines in our best or worst moments. In Old Man and The Sea, Santiago showed he was determined to catch the fish by willingly to keep trying till he death. In SurvivorMan, Les Stroud showed he was determined to live by refusing to let his raft fill up with water, and kept dumping out the water. Finally, in Into The Wild, Chris was so determined to live a nomadic lifestyle that he burned his money and ditched his car. Another trait they all had in common was knowledge. Santiago showed his knowledge of sea creatures by stabbing the sharks in the brain which he knew was between their eyes. Les Stroud showed his knowledge by pointing out what could poison him and what can cure him stating “Every ecosystem provides a poison and a cure.” Finally, Into The Wild Chris knowledge of what berries to eat helped him survive in Alaska. These two traits are what are needed for anyone’s survival.
